Environmental musician and sound designer Takashi Kokubo was featured in an article in the culture section of The Yomiuri Shimbun.
The article introduces Kokubo as the composer of the emergency earthquake alert sound used on smartphones and other devices, and explores his approach to sound design. Since the Great East Japan Earthquake, this alert sound has become something people hear frequently in everyday life. Kokubo commented that he “never expected it to be played so often.”
The article also refers to Kokubo’s book Designing with Sound: Why Does the Emergency Earthquake Alert Sound Create Tension? It explains the structure and psychological effects of sounds designed to instantly capture human attention. From the perspectives of music and sound design, the piece discusses how warning sounds as part of social infrastructure can be thoughtfully designed.
Kokubo’s long-standing work in the fields of environmental music and sound design is presented as a case study for considering the relationship between society and sound.
