The Asahi Shimbun Digital has published an interview with sound designer Takashi Kokubo. The article introduces the ideas and trial-and-error process behind the creation of the Earthquake Early Warning alert sound, which marks 20 years since the system began operation.
In response to the request for “a sound that people would absolutely notice, even while asleep,” Kokubo aimed to create a sound that would instantly draw people’s attention and lead them to take life-saving action. The article also touches on his thoughts about the sound, which rang repeatedly during the Great East Japan Earthquake, as well as the inner conflict he experienced as its creator.
Please read the story behind this “sound we do not want to hear, but one that is truly important,” created by a musician known for delivering soothing sounds.
