Stomu Yamashita’s music masterfully fuses environmental sound effects—cosmic winds, droplets of water, birdsong—with a broad palette of instrumental timbres. On Sea & Sky, this talent reaches full expression. Composed by Yamashita himself, the piece is performed primarily on synthesizers and percussion, and unfolds as a dramatic recording that anticipates a grand, radiant sonic world.
Keyboard magazine described Sea & Sky as “an auditory fable depicting the birth of life and the growth of knowledge, in which electronics and live orchestra fade in and out, merge and separate.” Yamashita’s performance—together with Takashi Kokubo and Sen Izumi—is breathtakingly beautiful and utterly captivating.
